CIFAL Malaga, with a vision of becoming a center of reference for the entire Mediterranean, involves the presence of the United Nations in Malaga. Also, with the signature of the collaboration agreement between Unicaja Banco and UNITAR, the financial institution will be part of the management structure and Executive Committee of CIFAL Malaga, and will also participate in the organization of activities related to social inclusion and urban governance and planning to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda.
Unicaja Banco’s support to this institutional project, which will reinforce the relationship with the United Nations, falls within the permanent exercise of its corporate social responsibility, as well as within its interest to contribute and strengthen the principles of good governance and sustainable economic development in the areas where it operates.
Unicaja Banco participates in the International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders (CIFAL, Centro Internacional de Formación de Autoridades y Líderes), which has just been established in Malaga to promote learning and foster the exchange of knowledge related to good practices in social inclusion and urban governance between public representatives, leaders of international organizations, private companies and academic institutions, to contribute to sustainable development and to improve the citizens’ quality of life. This centre, the first one of this kind in Spain, is a project of United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and is supported by Malaga City Council and other institutions, such as the Diputación Provincial, the University of Málaga (UMA) or the Malaga Confederation of Business Owners (CEM).

CIFAL Malaga has been presented in an event held today, 27 July, at Malaga City Council, and it has been attended by Unicaja Banco’s Chairman, Manuel Azuaga; Malaga Mayor, Francisco de la Torre, and the Division Director and head of UNITAR’s CIFAL Network, Alex Mejía, as well as representatives from other collaborating institutions.
Unicaja Banco’s support to this project falls within the permanent exercise of its corporate social responsibility, as well as within its interest in contributing and strengthening the principles of good governance and sustainable economic development in the areas where it operates.
The financial institution joins, together with other organizations and groups, the agreement, previously entered into, by Malaga City Council and UNITAR, to set the basis of this international project in Malaga city. The institutionswill be represented at CIFAL Malaga Executive Committee by the Chairman of Unicaja Banco, Manuel Azuaga.
CIFAL Malaga is the first centre of the CIFAL Network in Spain, and the fourth in Europa, of a total of 18 centres throughout the world. CIFAL Malaga has the vision of becoming a training center of reference for the entire Mediterranean, where local, national and regional leaders, representatives of international organizations, private companies and academic institutions can acquire skills that allow them to advance sustainable development in their communities and improve the quality of life of their citizens.
With the goal of improving decision-making and increasing leadership, the training activities of CIFAL Malaga are focused on two differentiated areas: on one hand, governance and urban planning, with specialization in strategic planning and tourism for development and on the other hand, social inclusion, covering topics related to improvement of the quality of life, prevention of radicalization and capacitation on UN Agenda 2030 for sustainable development. Unicaja Banco is signatory to the United Nations Global Compact since 2013, and in 2017 it joined as partner the Spanish Network of the United Nations Global Compact.
