This publication is part of the official programme of the National Committee for the commemoration of the five centuries of this achievement, carried out in the 16th century. In particular, this is the first part of a series of publications on one the greatest adventures in the history of navigation.

Unicaja Banco supports the publication of this comic on the Nao Victoria and its first circumnavigation around the world, in the exercise of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its interest in the promotion of culture and the dissemination of historical facts in the areas where it operates.

The full title of this comic, accessible from the website of Foro para la Paz en el Mediterráneo, is ‘La Nao Victoria. Una vuelta al mundo con nombre de Málaga (1519-1522)’. It has been illustrated by José Pablo García, with the script of Rafael Vidal, based on his book ‘Los primeros de Filipinas y Málaga’.

The Nao Victoria completed what until that time was the greatest sea adventure: the first voyage around the world, commanded by captains Ferdinand of Magellan, at the beginning of the expedition, and Juan Sebastián Elcano, on the way back. This was the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe and discover its full dimension.

On 8 September 1522, under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano and aboard the Victoria ship, some twenty men completed the greatest milestone in the history of navigation, becoming the first ones, after three years of struggle, to cross the big oceans and reveal the real size of the Earth.

In this first part, the reader will learn in an accurate and enjoyable way, not only about History but also about the sailing techniques used centuries ago or the influence of sea currents and winds in the defeat of ships, which had a significant influence, for example, on the exit of the ship from Manila.

Foro para la Paz en el Mediterráneo

The Foro para la Paz en el Mediterráneo, of which Unicaja Banco is a member, was formally constituted in Malaga as an association in November 2018, although its actions began a few years ago. It intends to promote activities fostering, in this geographical area, dialogue and cooperation at all levels.

It also intends to create among the society an awareness of defense and to set the pillars leading to a better understanding, knowledge and confidence, not only among the Mediterranean seaside countries, but also among the populations of both shores. In sum, its goal is to win peace and, for that aim, it sets three pillars: political dialogue, economic cooperation and security.

The Foro has previously published other comics, on figures such as Miguel de Cervantes, Blas de Lezo or Ruy López Villalobos and their corresponding achievements.
