The Asociación Leonesa de Apicultores (Leon Bee-keepers Association) has launched a campaign to promote the consumption of locally-produced honey in the province.

The first International Honey Contest – Provincia de León has been launched, sponsored by Unicaja Banco.

Unicaja Banco will offer special financing conditions to the 540 members of the Asociación Leonesa de Apicultores (Leon Bee-keepers Association), under an agreement to be signed in the short term. The bank will offer loans and working capital facilities for honey producers and packers in the Leon province to boost their activity and undertake new initiatives.

This commitment has been announced today by Marga Serna, Unicaja Banco Regional Manager, and by the President of the Asociación Leonesa de Apicultores, Javier Morán, in an event to present the activities of the annual convention to be held on 9 November, and to present the first edition of the International Honey Contest – Provincia de León, both activities being sponsored by Unicaja Banco.

One of the most anticipated initiatives is the I International Honey Contest of Leon, ‘created to defend bee-keeping in the province as essential pollinator, as well as to favour the rural population, fighting rural depopulation and contributing to the incorporation of women to this activity’, as said by Javier Morán, President of the Association.

It also intends to promote the consumption of honey as a natural product, informing consumers of the high quality of Leon honey versus other products from abroad.

Honey producers –natural persons or companies- may participate in the contest, by presenting samples of dark or clear honeys. The winner will be announced on 9 November, on the same day as the Association’s annual convention, to be held at Unicaja Banco’s Santa Nonia Hall. There will be a cash prize of 300 euros for the winners in each of the two categories and to additional awards.

The mentioned convention will also include talks about health and on honey plants. Other activities include honey testing and the presentation of a promotional video about Leon honey, part of a communication plan designed to promote the consumption of this product among the Leon citizens.
